The Dragon's Cry

A single roar resonates for miles around,
echoing through the mountain-side as the
leaders cower in terror from the fury.

Rising from the murky waters of the river
breathing fire over all that it despises,
the dragon aserts its' power.

The libraries are left untouched while
the scholars flee for their lives,
precious tombs are left untouched.

A few stand behind the angered creature
awed by the courage and rage before them,
they are the protected ones.

As the musicians continue playing the beast
blows smoke into the gates of the prisons,
almost as if trying to cause chaos.

The music calms the dragon and it
lowers itself to the water once more,
still breathing puffs of smoke.

Those it was protecting are safe as
is everything the creature protects,
its' enemies were not so lucky.

The dragon's temper is infamous and
it is rare that she is provoked,
they know of her power and her anger,
her ability to destroy has been proven.

Sometimes they forget and she is tested,
she does not approve of being roused but
when leaders overstep their boundaries
she is the first to make her voice heard.

As the valley quietens and the smoke settles,
the scholars and musicians return to their posts
while the rest of the world lies shaken.

So I'm submitting this to the folder for the Personal Myth contest on :iconknownames: but I'm not really submitting it for the contest. I am however submitting it for the :iconlitplease: "Enter The Dragon" contest!!

For Knownames; I decided not to focus on a particular mythical story but rather on one of my favorite mythical creatures; the dragon.
For LITplease; I opted to focus on how dragons are represented and in a way demonstrate how there is a bit of a dragon in all of us, because even though I was born in the year of the monkey, I've always identified with the dragon. Also, the reason the dragon rises out of the water is because 2012 is the year of the Water Dragon.

I chose this because I identify with the dragon more than any other mythical creature. A friend of mine once asked me what my favorite mythical creatures were and I said a dragon and a phoenix. When he asked why I said "Dragons are ferocious, they're clever, they're protectors, they're massive and strong and you'd think they'd destroy everything smaller than them, yet they've an acute sense of pride and they make fantastic mothers. Phoenixes are a literal circle of life, they are proof that everything can be reborn from ashes, because death is never the end, we will always return to be something new."

I still believe that and so I decided to write about how a dragon will destroy everything that stands in its way, or in the way of someone/something it cares about.

The actual information that inspired this poem can be found here: [link]

Good luck to everyone taking part in the contests!!!

As always, comments and :+fav:s are love!!

I really like the imagery in this, it's very easy to see everything you're describing
